Galaxies Near and Far

Mike Gladders tells us about our place in the galaxy and how we’ve used light of many colors to piece together this mystery. He then tells us how our galaxy fits into the collection of “island universes”, external galaxies with a diversity of properties. After a brief musical interlude, he concludes by explaining how galaxies can themselves serve as telescope to peer behind, at even more distant galaxies, using the dramatic phenomenon of gravitational lensing predicted by Einstein’s theory of general relativity.
