Dark Matter
An embarrassing majority of the matter in the universe is of a type never before seen in the lab, “Dark Matter.” Evan Shockley reviews the universe beyond our galaxy, discusses how we infer the existence of unseen things astronomically, and then surveys the compelling evidence for dark matter, which interacts with ordinary matter gravitationally, but emits (almost) no light. He then discusses the fascinating ideas for what dark matter could be (often a new fundamental particle), and his own role in building XENON-1T, a cutting edge experiment (deep underground) that may be the first to detect the elusive dark-matter particle.
